I am in Victoria. The blazer and the state*.

4 Aug

Every sewer and their dog seems to be talking about the rad By Hand London patterns and ladies. Sorry, I’m about to do it again too!

ZoSews - Victoria Blazer

Some hideously long time ago I was asked if I would like a copy of the Victoria blazer. You can imagine my response went something like, “yes, yes, love one, please, send immediately, now”. Sorry ladies, it did take me a while to bring her to life, but I am there now and that’s what matters, right? Right. The recent sewalong was a good way to keep motivated :)

ZoSews - Victoria Blazer

I made variation 1 out of a green linen and a watermelon coloured silk cotton blend, both from Clegs.  I LOVE this watermelon colour. I would wear it 24/7 if I could.

ZoSews - Victoria Blazer

The pattern doesn’t ask for the sleeves to be lined. I planned on doing it anyway, until I realised I didn’t have enough delicious silk cotton. Which meant that for once, I pretty much did what I was told and stuck to the instructions as written. (Edit: I lie. I didn’t want thus didn’t include the pockets. Oh yep, I changed the cuffs as well, applying the silk then folding back.) I did finish the sleeve seams hong kong style, which is ‘off-pattern’ but a nice touch I think. Here’s a bad indoor pick of the finish…

ZoSews - Victoria Blazer

The cuffs don’t have the opening/join on the outer side of the sleeve, I didn’t read the instructions there (naughty) and just threw (sewed) them on. I don’t mind, I finished them off with a cute little button each that the lovely Hannah from Sinbad & Sailor sent me too.

ZoSews - Victoria Blazer

I think I went awry in cutting her out somewhere, because the front pieces were about 5cms longer than the back pieces. Obvs the back pieces had to be cut to fit with the front, but I think I would have preferred the longer length.  You live and learn :)

ZoSews - Victoria Blazer

The front pieces and their funky darts look quite odd, and l thought they were going to throw me, but by actually reading the instructions and sticking to them, there was no throwing at all – in fact those weird looking front pieces were a piece of cake!

ZoSews - Victoria Blazer

One other little note, I made tiny hand tacks at the top and bottom of the each lapel to make them stay back. I also ran a line of stitching around the underside of the lapels and collar (green on top, watermelon bobbin) to help it sit back properly.

ZoSews - Victoria Blazer
So there you go. Meet my dear Victoria, she may not come out to play properly until we get some sun. It’s flippin’ cold here at the moment.

Z xx

Great colour! I know you wanted it longer (I always do) but I think that length is pretty good looking actually! If only your name was Victoria…:)

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:32 PM #

Thank you! Now that would be funny, Victoria, in Victoria, in Victoria!

  2. Kirsty August 4, 2013 at 8:14 PM #

Love the green linen! Looks lovely on and glad you got your sew jo back !

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:32 PM #

Thanks Kirsty! I’m glad my sewjo is back too – pesky little thing!

  3. sewbusylizzy August 4, 2013 at 8:26 PM #

Great colour, I think I really need a long linen version… yes, yes, I do…

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:33 PM #

      Do it Lizzy, do it!

      • sewbusylizzy August 5, 2013 at 9:08 PM #

I have so many things to sew at the moment it scares me!

      • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 9:10 PM #

I feel the same, but much slower than you! I was given a Fashionary which is becoming my sketched out to do list.

      • sewbusylizzy August 5, 2013 at 9:29 PM #

Oh they look like such a great idea. I’m completely hopeless at drawing but would love to try it some day.
I’m a bit consumed with gym & running at the moment which is consuming sewing time. Not good!

      • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 9:48 PM #

I wish I was consumed with exercise! Right now all my consumption is food!

      • sewbusylizzy August 6, 2013 at 5:13 AM #

I go through phases with exercise. A girlfriend asked me to go to the gym with her a couple of months ago, I agreed & then spent all night wondering how to get out of it. However I got sucked right back in and am also jogging again. Argh!!!

Awesome blazer Zoe. I adore those fabrics and the colours. They really suit you (awesome first pic BTW). I made a calico of the cropped version of the blazer this afternoon.

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:36 PM #

Thanks Anna! The intrepid photographer (the Mr) and I are starting to have some fun playing around with shots a bit more :) It’s funny, this colour is not one that I thought was ‘mine’… Look forward to seeing your Victoria!

  5. Manju August 4, 2013 at 10:00 PM #

Love the whole scarf, lining, jacket colour combo! Seen so many great versions of this jacket. Yours is lovely!

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:37 PM #

Thanks Manju! That scarf is definitely one of my most favourite accessories – I wear it to death!

  6. Tia Dia August 4, 2013 at 10:58 PM #

  7. IngeMaakt August 4, 2013 at 11:13 PM #

Thank you! Note to self, wear these colours more often ;)

    Terrific looking blazer! Lovely colors.

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:41 PM #

Thanks! I do love watermelon, coral or whatever it’s called :)

  9. Kelly August 5, 2013 at 2:51 AM #

Such a great jacket! You have the most perfect colors and I love the details at the cuffs. Fantastic!

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:42 PM #

Thanks Kelly! Who would know that the buttons are there for sin-hiding ;)

  10. Sabs August 5, 2013 at 5:32 AM #

Love the colour combo and I agree, that watermelon is divine! I’m a bit obsessed with that colour at the mo – I’m looking at some gladioli right now that my hubby planted specially for me in a similar colour just cos I kept going on about how that’s “my” colour right now… except I have nothing in my wardrobe like it! I’m gonna have to rectify that quicksmart. Anyway, love your jacket, it looks fab!

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:43 PM #

Thank you :) Your husband is a keeper!! That’s so nice. I highly recommend getting on the ‘I sew with watermelon’ bus.

  11. Gjeometry August 5, 2013 at 9:17 AM #

Great blazer, love the colour combination and the cuffs!

  12. Cirque Du Bebe August 5, 2013 at 9:20 AM #

Wow this is gorgeous! I love the idea of a linen blazer, and this looks so beautifully made. Lots of extra touches there that I was reading going ”I don’t even know what that is!. So well done to you.

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:46 PM #

Oh wow! Thank you :) Yeah linen is the perfect, ‘oh yes, I do look dishevelled, but I’m supposed to’, fabric.

  13. gingermakes August 5, 2013 at 10:41 AM #

Really, really cute! I love this on you! I just finished mine tonight, and now you’ve got me itching for a linen one!

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:47 PM #

Thanks miss! Go Victoria Blazer round 2 for sure! Look forward to seeing round one as well :)

  14. sewamysew August 5, 2013 at 11:11 AM #

I love this version, the colours work so well together. I’ve totally been planning a linen one, it’s nice to see it before I start, it works perfectly with it. Nice make

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:48 PM #

Thanks Amy, glad I could help with a linen preview :)

  15. poppykettle August 5, 2013 at 12:17 PM #

Indeed, an absolutely fabulous shade of green! Especially on you. When I first saw the pattern sleeve for this number, I wasn’t sold. But seeing actual real-life madeup-up versions of it make me want this! I AM curious though… you don’t find the linen too wrinkly? Or does that just add to it’s charm? Either way, it’s a gorgeous wardrobe addition!!

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:50 PM #

Thank you! What was it about the sleeve you didn’t like? I tell you what’s great about the sleeve, it goes in without tear inducing amounts of easing yes yes yes! Well I’ve only worn it for the photos so I can’t comment on the wrinkle factor yet, but I’m gonna hope it’s a charm factor ;)

  16. Sally {thequirkypeach} August 5, 2013 at 2:20 PM #

Oooh I like this in the green linen! And the longer length! I may have to pull a similar fabric out of my stash and copy you :) And love the buttons on the cuffs! So cool!

    • ZoSews August 5, 2013 at 8:51 PM #

Thanks Sally! Copy away! Not that it’d really be copying, everything’s been done before right? :)

  17. Bec August 5, 2013 at 3:57 PM #

    You freaken babe:) X

  18. Hazel August 6, 2013 at 5:47 AM #

I’m glad your sewjo is back! :) Love the pop of watermelon pink under the green linen and I like the way your cuffs turned out with the little button even if you made that part of the instructions up by yourself, totally call it a design feature and say it was intentional! ;)

  21. Nat @ Made in Home August 7, 2013 at 6:34 PM #

I love it! The colour is really beautiful. I am seeing a lot of sewers making this, I may have to join!

  22. Renay August 7, 2013 at 9:23 PM #

    waaa!
    love it :-)
From one watermelon lover to another…

  23. ooobop! August 10, 2013 at 6:58 PM #

I thought I’d commented on this jacket. But clearly only in my head! It’s just perfect Zo. The colour combination is lush and linen is my favourite and my best! In fact I used the same colour combo and fabric for my Elsie!! http://ooobop.com/2012/08/04/is-it-a-bird/ x

  24. Zoe August 17, 2013 at 8:02 AM #

Love the blazer, especially the contrast lining. I bought a blazer pattern that I altered and have been having a lot of trouble with and a few days later this pattern came out… in exactly the style I wanted. Can you iamgine how mad I was? -_-

  25. Louise September 23, 2013 at 7:14 PM #

Wow it is stunning, I love the colours. Wish my sewing skills were up to that level but I’m plodding away. I’m at the simple tunic level at the moment, But blogosphere is so inspirational, thank you for sharing your blazer it is certainly something to aspire too.
